Forms and Fees

Fees

The scouting fee model is a little complicated, so we like to explain this for new Scout families to give them a better understanding of how it works.

Fee Structure

The scouting fee model is a little complicated, so we like to explain this for new Scout families to give them a better understanding of how it works.

Scouts BSA (“BSA”), as an organization, has three different levels that collect fees. Each scout contributes fees to all three layers, and fees fund the level to which they are contributed.

1.      BSA has a national umbrella; national fees fund BSA nationally (your scout will benefit from national resources, such as leader training or handbook production)

a.      Scouts BSA also charges a one-time new member fee of $25. This is collected when you sign-up your scout.

2.      Which is divided into councils; council fees fund the council (your scout benefits from our council properties, council activities such as day camps, amongst other things). Our council is the Chief Seattle Council.

3.      And then further into packs, which collect Pack dues. For Pack 584, this is $60:

All levels set their fees at a level of fiscal prudence – the minimum level to not run a deficit and ensure the level is able to carry out the scouting activities. Pack 584 is responsible for setting and collecting its own Pack dues. National and Council fees are set at a higher level, and we can only provide you with the relevant information – we do not set them.

Pack 584 is run by volunteers; none are paid. This means that the annual dues you pay to the pack go into activities to support your child’s development. The cubmaster, assistant cubmaster, den leaders, treasurer, chartered org representative, stem chair, fundraising chair and the committee chair are all volunteers. They each contribute countless hours of their time for free to help the pack run. If you have any questions, reach out to our new member coordinator - new.member.coordinator@cubpack584.org

Fee Collection

BSA annual fees (the National and Council ones) were $125 total per scout ($80 for National, $30 for Council, and $15 for Scout Life magazine – a monthly publication) and collected annually. These collected at sign-up, with future years collected by the Pack to be paid to BSA. If registering as a new Scout in Oct to Dec, the fee is prorated for the CURRENT Scout year AND fees for the NEXT Scout year. Pack dues are collected by the Pack treasurer.

For subsequent annual renewals, the combined BSA annual fees ($125) and pack dues ($60) are collected in the fall (usually October/November) by the treasurer for the following year for a total payment of $185.

Other Potential Fees

The pack also offers our scouts the option to attend the annual BSA summer Resident Camp which is run by the Chief Seattle Council. Resident Camp fees are not supplemented by Pack 584 or BSA. Anyone who attends by registering with the pack, will pay the Pack Treasurer the fee which 100% of is paid to Chief Seattle Council.

Pack 584 wants every child to experience the fun of Cub Scouting. Although the cost of joining Cub Scouting is not very expensive, if there is any financial difficulty with the joining fees, or with the cost of things like the uniform, patches or handbook, please contact the Committee Chair or the Cubmaster (see the Contacts Page) to confidentially discuss the availability of Pack and/or Council scholarship funds. It is the express policy of Pack 584 that no child will be denied the benefits of Cub Scouting simply because of financial reasons.

Youth

For a child to officially join Pack 584, we determine that the he or she will be part of a Den being formed to receive them, or that the child is joining an existing Den which is willing to add him or her as a member. If there is no designated Den, Pack 584 will still accept a youth membership application pending the formation of a new Den in the same grade level. In order for their children to join, one parent or legal guardian must (1) complete the official youth application form and (2) submit a check payable to Cub Pack 584 for the fees listed above, as prorated for the time of joining. The youth application form can be secured from the Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster (see the Contact Page).

Den Leaders and Adult Scouters

For an adult to officially join Pack 584 as a Den Leader or other adult Scouter, he or she must: (1) complete the official adult application form; (2) provide his or her social security number (3) submit to a background check. The adult application form can be secured from the Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster (see the Contact Page).

NOTE: All registered adult volunteers are now required to complete the online Youth Protection training even before submitting the application referred to next - the certificate of completing this online Youth Protection training has to be printed out and attached to the application.
